December 10, 2009 – The grand opening of the first modern renewable and solar energy laboratory in Ukraine took place at Kyiv Polytechnic Institute. The laboratory is equipped with state-of-the-art, energy-efficient equipment. Now Ukrainian students have direct access to the most up-to-date technology that offers an alternative to conventional types of fuels.
The establishment of the center was made possible thanks to a joint initiative on the part of National Technical University of Ukraine “Kyiv Polytechnic Institute” and the company Robert Bosch GmbH (Germany). NTUU “KPI” management and a delegation of officials from Robert Bosch GmbH attended the opening. Professor Gennady Varlamov, Vice Rector of NTUU KPI said that the center’s operations would create the prerequisites for solving one of Ukraine’s problems. Despite quality theoretical training, heating engineering students have been mostly deprived of the opportunity to gain practical skills in working with renewable energy sources. He was also confident that such technologies are the wave of the future and Ukraine cannot afford to remain on the sidelines of their development process. - Less dependence from gas supplies is what such technologies provide, and our center will serve to introduce them in Ukraine as rapidly as possible, said Mr. Varlamov.
- In an era of rising prices of conventional fuels in European Union countries, the popularity of heat technology that works on renewable energy sources in Europe has gone up by more than 12% in last 3 years said Rene Schlegel, GM of Robert Bosch Ukraine and representative of the Bosch Group in Russia, Ukraine, Belarus and Kazakhstan. - Ukraine is part of the pan-European process of introducing technologies that provide an alternative to fossile fuels. After all, their use is a guarantee of heat and hot water in homes in any circumstances and at the predictable costs.
- Development and introduction of environmentally-friendly and energy-saving technologies is a process that requires long-term investment, added Vitaly Bulda, regional director of Bosch Thermotechnik GmbH in the CIS and Baltics. – In 2008, annual sales of the Bosch Group of renewable energy systems, from wind-turbine gearboxes to ground-source heat pumps, already exceeded the one billion euro. Today, 45 percent of our research and development budget is targeted at products that protect the environment and conserve resources.
The center features state-of-the-art of renewable heat technology – a heat pump, solar collectors of different types, a solid fuel boiler and a latest-generation gas condensing boiler. All of the installations are equipped with electronic control systems with presentation of current data on a computer. Practice on this high-tech equipment will enable student heating engineers to considerably improve their qualifications and implement their learned skills in practical applications after graduating.
- Bosch is interested in quality training of experts, who will have thorough knowledge of the new technologies and equipment that are capable of being components of an energy-efficient building of the future, said Mariusz Wolniak, director of the Bosch Thermotechnik department of Robert Bosch Ukraine.
About NTUU KPI
NTUU KPI opened on August 31, 1898 with four departments – mechanical, engineering, agriculture and chemical. Today, NTUU KPI is the largest technical research university in Ukraine and one of the leading universities in Europe and the world. Training is conducted at eight institutes (including two military ones) and 18 departments. The NTUU KPI campus features eight research and education centers, 12 scientific research institutes, 14 research and development centers and one design bureau. NTUU KPI trains highly-qualified experts to the education and qualification levels of “bachelor,” “specialist” and “master” in various fields and professions in various sectors of the economy and social sphere of Ukraine and other countries. Today, the main focus of NTUU KPI’s operations is training of highly-qualified experts and conducting scientific research with the aim of developing Ukraine’s economy. One of these areas of endeavor is development of environmentally-safe, energy-saving and energy-efficient technologies.
